Core Technology & Machine Structure

Four engineering decisions behind the core drilling range. The numbered points on the machine diagram correspond to the systems below.

Stone Core Drilling Workflow

A core drilling job follows four steps: secure the block and position the core center, set diameter and depth on the machine, drill with water-cooled feed to full depth, then extract the cylinder — the core goes to turning and polishing, and the sleeve removed around it yields rings, boxes and smaller vessels.

01

Full-Cylinder Core Extraction

A hollow diamond core bit removes a complete cylinder from the stone in one operation, creating solid vase, urn or column stock without assembling segmented pieces — no glue seams, no weakness planes, no watertightness risk in the finished vessel.

02

LMZK Gantry for Large Cores

The 4.9 t gantry frame holds the drilling head and block stable through Ø600 mm, 900 mm-deep cores: alignment error compounds with depth, and the rigidity is what keeps core walls straight and breakage rates low at production volume.

03

ZDZK Compact Vertical Layout

The ZDZK-300 vertical layout concentrates Ø300 mm drilling into 1.2 tonnes and 1300 × 800 mm of floor — monument shops and small factories core blanks without a gantry line, at an investment scaled to moderate volumes.

04

Water-Cooled Core Bits

Water cools the diamond segments and carries cutting slurry away from the core face: bit life stretches, core walls stay clean, and airborne dust is controlled at the source instead of settling in the workshop.

05

One-Clamping Deep Drilling

900 mm depth without repositioning keeps the cylinder axis aligned from top to bottom: the blank never moves between passes, so wall straightness holds along the full depth of tall vessels.

06

Downstream Production Link

Core drilling is the blank-making step upstream of the stone lathe: drilled cylinders turn on the LGFX lathe into vases and columns, then polish to finish — the drilling machine completes a hollow-ware production cell, and the material link runs drill → lathe → polisher.

Stone Core Drilling Machine Selection, Installation & Operation FAQ

Common Questions About DINOSAW Stone Drilling Machines

Our stone drilling machines effectively process both natural and engineered stone materials including:

• Natural stones: granite, marble, limestone, travertine, quartzite, soapstone, slate, and sandstone

• Engineered materials: quartz composites and porcelain slabs

Diamond core technology ensures clean, chip-free drilling even in hard stones like granite. The variable speed control and PLC system let operators optimize drilling parameters for each material type, preventing damage and ensuring perfect results regardless of stone hardness or composition.

The choice depends on your specific needs:

Gantry drilling machines:

• Best for: Large stone slabs and high-volume production

• Drilling capacity: LMZK-600 up to 600mm diameter, 900mm depth

• Advantages: Stable platform, precise positioning, multiple sequential holes

• Typical users: Large fabrication facilities with heavy workload

Vertical drilling machines:

• Best for: Smaller workshops and detail work

• Drilling capacity: ZDZK-300 up to 300mm diameter, 450mm depth

• Advantages: Compact footprint, easy setup, cost-effective

• Typical users: Small to medium workshops with space limitations

Both provide high precision, but production volume, available space, and application requirements should determine your choice.

Our stone drilling machines create rough-shaped products for various applications:

• From granite: Columns, balusters, and security bollards

• From marble: Decorative vases and luxury bathtubs

• From blue limestone: Ceremonial urns and memorial products

• From engineered stone: Planters and fish tanks

• From travertine: Stone benches and decorative lanterns

These machines create initial cylindrical forms with consistent wall thickness that serve as the foundation for finished products after additional processing. The precision drilling significantly reduces material waste and manual labor while ensuring high-quality results.

Yes, water cooling is essential for four key reasons:

1. Prevents diamond bit overheating and extends tool life by up to 300%

2. Reduces dust for safer working conditions and better air quality

3. Flushes away debris to create cleaner, more precise holes

4. Improves overall cutting quality and efficiency

Our machines include integrated water cooling systems with adjustable flow based on material and drilling parameters. For environmentally conscious operations, we offer closed-loop water recycling systems that filter and reuse water, reducing consumption by up to 85%.

When a drill bit gets stuck during operation, follow these steps:

1. Immediately stop the machine and cut power

2. Don't force rotation or apply excessive pressure as this may damage the machine

3. Apply small amounts of cooling water around the bit to reduce friction

4. Gently attempt reverse rotation at very low speed (if your machine has this function)

5. For persistent jams, use the emergency release system built into our machines

Most drilling jams occur due to improper speed settings, insufficient cooling, or material density variations. Our PLC-controlled machines feature automatic torque monitoring that detects resistance changes and adjusts drilling parameters to prevent most jamming situations before they occur.

Controlling noise in stone drilling operations requires a multi-faceted approach:

• Equipment selection: Our machines feature noise-dampening technology that reduces operational noise by 15-20dB compared to standard models

• Proper installation: Mount machines on vibration-isolating pads to minimize structural noise transfer

• Enclosure options: Semi or fully enclosed drilling stations can reduce ambient noise by 25-30%

• Maintenance: Regular lubrication and part inspection prevents excess noise from worn components

• Operational techniques: Optimal drilling speeds and water flow reduce friction noise

For workshop environments requiring additional noise reduction, we can customize acoustic barrier solutions based on your specific needs. These custom solutions can help reduce noise levels to meet international workplace safety standards while maintaining production efficiency in your particular setting.

Proper maintenance ensures maximum uptime and performance:

Daily tasks:

• Check and clean water filters and spray nozzles

• Inspect drill bits for wear and replace as needed

• Clear debris from work area and drilling surfaces

Weekly tasks:

• Lubricate all moving parts according to manual

• Check belt tensions and adjust if necessary

• Inspect all electrical connections

Monthly tasks:

• Perform thorough inspection of mechanical components • Verify calibration of positioning systems • Clean the entire coolant system Most components are easily accessible, and our machines include diagnostic systems that alert operators to potential issues before they cause downtime.

Any hollow or cylindrical stone product starts as a core drilling job: vases and bathtubs from large cores, urns and memorial vessels from medium cores, planters and fish tanks from wide shallow cores, plus benches, lanterns and column blanks. The drilled cylinder turns on a stone lathe for the outer profile and polishes to finish — while the sleeve removed around the core yields rings, boxes and smaller vessels, so material utilization stays high. A single drilled blank often becomes two or three sellable products across the cell.

Yes — and this is where core drilling's economics beat segmentation. The core is the primary product: the cylinder that becomes the vase, urn or column on the lathe. The sleeve — the stone surrounding the core — is not waste: depending on the core diameter, it yields rings and bands for planters and fire pits, shallow bowls and boxes from the sleeve bottom, and slab offcuts for smaller vessels. Material utilization rises toward the whole block, which changes the cost calculation per finished piece. When quoting hollow-ware products, price the material against everything the block produces, not just the core — the sleeve revenue is part of the drilling machine's return.

Yes — the drill-to-lathe path is the standard hollow-ware production chain. The cored cylinder mounts between chuck and tailstock on the LGFX stone lathe, which turns the outer profile — vase body, urn shoulder, column shaft — and refines the surface, followed by polishing for the finish. The handoff is dimensional: specify your target outer profile when sizing the core, and the drilling stage leaves adequate wall stock for the turning passes. One shop running both machines works as a cell: drill the blank, move it to the lathe, turn and polish — three stations, one material flow, no external blank suppliers.

Stop feeding immediately and reverse rotation gently while maintaining water flow — most stuck bits release on reverse. If the bit remains jammed, raise the spindle and clear slurry from the kerf before resuming at reduced feed: the usual cause is slurry packing or pinching at the core's snap-off point, not bit failure. Prevention beats extraction: keep water flow continuous, match feed rate to stone hardness, and snap or section long cores before they bind against the hole wall. Persistent jamming on one job usually signals a worn bit or wrong segment specification for the stone — swap the bit before the next core.
