Demystifying Translucent Stones: Types and Decorative Applications

Yuki

Many people visiting upscale consumption venues or luxurious villas will encounter eye-catching stone surfaces that emit light, creating a stunning visual effect and a strong atmospheric rendering for the space.

Translucent stones possess a unique characteristic of being crystal clear and transparent, combined with a variety of bright and pleasing colors. They skillfully transform monotonous and dull flat surfaces into three-dimensional visual arts. The various patterns resemble flowing clouds and water, elegant and graceful, smooth and clear, beautiful and everlasting, with a transparent and luminous texture. Therefore, they have been widely used in the construction and decoration industry both domestically and internationally.

Translucent stones can be used for wall decoration, ceiling panels, backlit feature walls, specialty lighting, backlit ceilings, backlit bars, backlit flooring, backlit pillars, backlit lamp posts, and a variety of different shaped backlit countertops and translucent art pieces, ornaments, and more.

So, what types of translucent stones are there?

Currently, the translucent stones available on the market are mainly divided into natural stones and man-made stones. The fundamental difference between the two is that natural stones are formed by nature, primarily consisting of jade, semi-precious stones, and ultra-thin stones. In contrast, man-made translucent stones are a type of composite material made from polymer materials. Judging from the appearance, it is difficult for ordinary consumers to distinguish between man-made and natural translucent stones.

Main raw materials and key points of craftsmanship for translucent stones:

  1. Semi-transparent natural stone varieties: These are generally jades, semi-precious stones, and ultra-thin stones (ordinary marble can have a certain translucent effect if thin enough).

Stone varieties include: pine resin jade, white marble, imported jade, and luxurious stones with crystals.

  2. Synthetic stones: Man-made synthetic stones contain a certain proportion of resin in their formula. According to the synthetic stone process, by selecting semi-transparent marble particles, semi-transparent resin, and light-colored pigments, translucent synthetic stone panels can be produced. They have a competitive advantage in mass production capabilities compared to natural stones.

  3. Craftsmanship key points: The cutting and installation methods for translucent stones are similar to those for ordinary stones and glass, and can be achieved through bonding, framing, and drilling methods. It is important to note that because translucent stones have controllable light transmission rates, the requirements for light sources are not high. Common fluorescent tubes or LED light sources can be used. However, to ensure the evenness of the surface light source, the light source should be kept at a distance of more than 15cm from the surface.

In today's focus on life experience, decoration is no longer just painting walls and laying floors, but pays more attention to creating an atmosphere, a certain feeling that is unforgettable at first sight, and ideally, captivating.

Translucent stones work exceptionally well in different styles, layouts, and characteristic spaces. Artistic lighting (or natural light) emanating from within the stone fully expresses the texture, color, and quality of natural stones, enhancing their visual effects. This is softer and more natural compared to direct lighting.
